How do I know if my meat is safe?

Meat is safeIs it safe to buy meat? Are there antibiotics in my meat? Do I have to buy organic? Where can I go to find more information?

These are the most common questions people most often have about their beef, pork, chicken, turkey and lamb, so I spent an afternoon with a person who knows and loves meat. Jennie Hodgen is a mom of four that holds a PhD in Meat Science who has taught thousands of people about food science. She farms in Indiana and is originally from a ranch in New Mexico, so she has a wonderful firsthand perspective.

She talks briefly about the complex system in place to be sure our meat is safe on this video. Jennie also suggests you ask questions of the person at your grocery store’s meat case or look up the establishment meat was processed at with USDA MPI app.

A self-proclaimed nerd, Jennie can help anyone understand the science in meat, including food safety, processing and how to be sure it’s cooked properly. You can see our Facebook Live video here, including a more extensive discussion about how farmers and ranchers protect you from antibiotics.

Most of us are overwhelmed in the meat case. Get answers to the big questions to simplify your shopping.
