Frenzy & Freakout Over Flu

By Michele Payn

Media outlets around the global have been in a frenzy with spreading fear about the flu, now known as H1N1. Pandemic is the best way to describe it – and I’m not talking about the sickness, but the sensationalism surrounding the mutated virus. You cannot get this virus from pork or pigs, contrary to misperceptons formed around the original name. More than 500,000 people around the world die annually from common season flu.

Industrial Agriculture & Sustainability

By Michele Payn

Entrepreneurs in agriculture work to create a truly sustainable society, one that includes food for people living in poverty beyond your imagination. Shouldn’t true sustainability put food production back in its rightful place of providing for basic human needs? The U.N. has called for 100% increase in world food production to feed an expected population of 9 billion by 2050. I fully believe that we need to leave the world a better place and protect environmental, but also believe in utilizing technology to meet human needs – and not just those closest to the Whole Foods Market.

Leading agricultural advocate Michele Payn points to the acts of vandalism that animal rights and envrionmental activists have committed, including arson proven in the court of law. This professional speaker wants to be sure people know agriculture shows up every day, at every meal.

Idea Proliferation

By Michele Payn

Last night was one of those moments to learn from others; we had our first #agchat on Twitter. It was energizing, thought-provoking, eye-opening and tough to keep up with speed of conversation. Agchat is similar to #journchat on Twitter, which brings together writers and public relations people. Believe it or not, there’s even #GNO as a chat. As I participated in these chats and saw hundreds of people coming together to discuss a common topic, a chat session for agriculture seemed logical – so #agchat started on Tuesday nights, 8-10 p.m. EDT.

Social Media = Agriculture's Opportunity

By Michele Payn

Why should you take the time to engage in social media?  It’s pretty simple; sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin and YouTube give you the opportunity to reach millions.  These are tools that aren’t just for teenagers or techies; social media has become mainstream – and agriculture stands to be left behind if we don’t…

Misconception & Work Ethic

By Michele Payn

Mike Rowe’s video paints a picture of the need for correcting misconceptions and building a work ethic. Rowe describes his experience of working with a rancher to castrate lambs and finding firsthand that “humane” techniques aren’t necessarily the “right thing to do” as compared the practical application learned by people who have decades of knowing what is best for animals. He learned firsthand that misconceptions can cause pain, literally and figuratively.
