Building Young People

This past week (and month) has been consumed by our county fair.  Show day is always a special day for those of us who grew up on a halter.  Getting the fairgrounds ready (through a $2 million capital campaign) has taken me offline for the last few weeks.  As I walk the barns, it’s rewarding to see young people caring for their animals, the pride of parents and the lessons learned through hard work.  There are few places that a young person can better find  the lessons of perseverance, work ethic and integrity.

If you haven’t been to a fair this summer, make a point to get to one – it’s a wonderful reminder of why we do what we do in American agriculture.  Those young people will also show you why it’s important to ensure our industry is here for them in the future, but you have to let them know why you care.  Fair  is also a great time to educate people about where their food comes from, with simple conversations.  Enjoy!
